DESCRIPTION:
The Piceance Basin is located in Rio Blanco, Grand and Moffat Counties of Northwestern CO. The Ryan Gulch 3D/3C seismic survey lies at the heart of the Piceance and comprises a 120 square mile area situated midway between Rifle and Rangeley, Colorado. Ryan's Gulch is the first mountain portable winter program to be conducted on federal lands in more than twenty years (see News). The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Fish and Wildlife and Colorado Division of Wildlife have numerous restrictions in place for the protection of sensitive Native American Culture, Paleontological resources and wildlife. Species present during the survey included, winter range for Mule Deer and Elk, Sage Grouse winter and nesting habitat and migratory birds. Operations were administered from a 140 man base camp located within the 3D grid at about 8,500 feet.
